Quick Writes in Room 9

This is an image of all the students in room 9 participating in a Quick Write.

Students were given a picture prompt and seven minutes to write. Once time is up there is an expectation that they read their writing to two people, preferably either side or in front of them (this minimises movement/chaos throughout the room), and then whomever is willing to share their writing to the whole class can.
I've had to restrict this to eight people each time, as there are many who are eager to share (which is awesome!).
Room 9 has become used to the routine of the quick write. They respond to a range of different prompts - sentences, pictures, and words - and can usually produce writing of quite a high standard.
This doesn't always suit everybody - especially if they are having a bad day. I tend to do writing in the morning or middle blocks.

I am planning some great picture prompts to do with Culture (for UOI6: Who We Are) and some fun ones when Halloween comes around.

Staff Meeting - Gail Loane

Staff Meeting - Gail Loane - Wednesday 24th August 2016

Andrew Jackson piece
- Use of the 5 senses
- Description - Factual
- No personal response/opinion

Leaf Description
A thick central artery holds the decaying mass together.
Small veins run off in tangents with patchwork remnants clinging on.
Shades of brown in stark contrast with the whiteness of the paper beneath.
A faint smell of rot lingers

Eco-literacy
- Connect with the simple
- What are the possibilities to get children quickly writing?
- Good teaching habit, ask yourself: What can I do with the kids?
- Create a challenge for them e.g. try not to use 'I' or 'my'

Look at a piece of student writing and decide what can be improved/what needs to be worked on and then think about how this can be incorporated into your teaching.

Murray Gadd - Research on writing
What makes teachers effective? - Three main points are Key Factors of Effectiveness.
- Expectations - Vision of achievement - How is this communicated to the learners?
- Learning Goals - What do teachers think about when they create goals for/with learners?
Learning Tasks - How are they set up? Deliberate and specific tasks for learning.
Direct instruction - Explicit teaching.
- Responding to learner's work - Feedback/feedforward - Is it clear?
- Motivating and challenging learners (cognitive)
- Organisation and management - Differentiation - If it is a whole-class lesson aim for 100% learner engagement/need.
Self-regulation - Actions the teachers take to give students a sense of ownership/responsibility, to become strategic learners.

Developing student agency - use of the book 'Choice Words'

- Learning intentions are too broad - stick to using a learning focus for each lesson.

Memoir - Model - Piano Rock by Gavin Bishop
Give background to hook the students in.
- Make them aware that there is a person behind the model.

Read for meaning - picture aids can be used to ensure 100% understanding from all students.

Use of visual contrast - use colouring pencils to colour for each paragraph - look at what colour each paragraph makes you feel.

Make students aware of the deliberate choices that author's make - Allow them to discover this.

Pick one sentence for students to imitate, e.g. The creek, white with ice, had patches of black where someone before me had...
(white with ice = adjectival phrase)

Plan: Students to brainstorm 4 nouns e.g. window, duvet, light, floor.
- Come up with a full sentence before they move away to write independently.
Success Criteria: Include one sentence with a noun and a descriptor after the noun.

Ensure to teach all different types of writing:
- Shared
- Guided
- Independent
- Collaborative

Attitude Performance - August 18th, 2016

Attitude Performance - Friendship Factor/Tackling Technology - Thursday 18th August 2016

Today we had the pleasure of meeting Liz from Attitude.
Attitude is an organisation that is:

"Dedicated to equipping teenagers with the information and skills they need to negotiate the adolescent years and build meaningful lives."

Liz used humour to capture our attention and share key messages about quality friendships, bullying, and our digital footprints. The information that was presented to our learners was specific to their age level. This is information that we as teachers inform them repeatedly, however it is important that the students hear this from other sources.

You can find more information about Attitude and their strategies to equip young people with life skills here:

Meet the Teacher Evening - Power Point

Putting together this powerpoint was a fantastic way to share information with parents/caregivers. My tutor teacher was a fantastic support, giving me advice and feedback and helping to set me up for success. Pip Mears (SMT), was present on the evening to support me and chat with parents/caregivers.
Despite my nervousness, I believe the evening went really well. At least eight parents/caregivers attended, with whom I spoke to individually.

Meet the Teacher Evening

Short notice was given to parents and caregivers to attend a Meet the Teacher evening. I managed to email all the parents/caregivers from the school list. I also posted to the class blog, as parents and students were familiar with the forum.
A few parents responded tht they could attend, whilst others set up times to meet with me after school or during breaks.

Opportunities for Lighthouse learners

Sorry for the delay this was on the schedule for last week of the previous term!

Opportunities for enrichment:  Historically we are very good at providing enrichment opportunities for lighthouse learners.  Is this still happening in 2016?

Using your records, including the SLC and midyear report, note here the opportunities that lighthouse learners have engaged with so far this year.

Anyone who has not yet been connected with an opportunity will need to be a focus for terms 3 and 4.
Student Voice Google Survey.

Purpose - to gather a student perspective of the lighthouse learner experience this year.
  • To identify aspects of our programme or practice that could be improved before the end of the year.

Suggested 5 questions:
  1. First Name
  2. Describe your experience as a lighthouse learner at Berkley this year.
  3. What is working well for you in your homeroom class?
  4. What else is working for you outside the classroom (specialisation, academies, extension groups etc)
  5. What would make your learning at Berkley better?
  6. Anything else you would like us to know?
Please email any feedback to Beth ASAP.  Plan is to share survey next week.
Next meeting
Venue: Room 21 (Thanks Kathryn)
Date: Wednesday August 3 2016 8:00am
Focus: Student Voice + UOI
Shane will be absent at Sports Camp.

Letter to Parents and Caregivers

In the first week if Term Three I wrote an introductory letter to Parents and Caregivers. This letter was to establish a connection with Whanau; to express my aims for their children; to convey the learning their children were going to undertake; and to provide links with which they could communicate with me.
After drafting an initial letter, Rachel Van Hueven and I collaborated to editing/re-craft, which was then seen by our SMT Pip Mears.
I received numerous emails, and messages in learners' Agenda books, from a range of parents welcoming me to the classroom.

Staff Meeting: Modern Learning Practices - 24/11/2015

This was a really interactive/collaborative staff meeting run by colleagues who shared their particular skills/knowledge. I've had experience with Kahoot, Active Inspire, and Google Doc voice typing, however i still learnt from my colleagues perspectives and experiences.
Gigapixel was completely new to me, and I see potential for its use in the classroom when teaching in a range of curriculum areas, particularly in Science.
Coding is an incredibly valuable skill to develop as a teacher and a learner. When you understand/develop knowledge of coding the world of digital technology is limitless. I plan on using the Hour of Code with my class during Room 13 time.
Gaming and Cinematic Narrative both have their place in teaching and learning. I can see myself using the cinematic Narrative in the classroom over Gaming.

PD: Golf and Ki-O-Rahi

This was a really great opportunity to learn from an expert Gold player/coach. Shaun  establish a strong rapport with the students right from the beginning and had great resources to keep them engaged. Room 29 definitely showed improvement in their skills and knowledge by the end of the lesson!

Ki - o rahi is such a fast-paced and fun interactive game where all skill levels can engage. The goal is to hit the target in the middle (1-2 defensive players are in there), whilst the rest are moving about the outer circle

So what?
A great game to build te reo Maaori and tikanga Maaori

Staff Meeting - PYP - 15/11/2015

Code Cracker challenge, Number, Backwards written words, and more... a great way to kick off a staff meeting. I thrive on these types of challenges!!!

As a team we went ahead and wrote/drew the Berkley Normal Middle School motto, values, PYP/IB, and what they mean to us through symbolism. Rangahau team members, Karen (team leader/tutor teacher), Matt Cameron, Trinity Ahie (team members), and I collaborated on the above design.
I have learnt a lot about IB/PYP form Matt, who has previous experience teaching at IB schools in Europe. I valued his input and direction as we went through this task.
Karen and Trinity both contributed their wealth of IB experience primarily from a Berkley point of view.

PD: Turbo Touch

P.E. Turbo Touch and Dance

We learnt a new game today for P.E. It is very fast-pace, easy to learn, and very fun. Kyla (P;E) shared the youtube clip for me to show and discuss with Room 29 before we went out and tried for ourselves.
The staff had a dance practice also to learn more dances for the formal. Very good to refresh and learn.

PD: Active Panel

ActivPanel

Trintity helped me with learning about the ActivPanel. With the touch screen, it is easier to have the scroll bar always showing (saves scrolling with a mouse). SREally looking forward to the upgrade due in Room 29 soon!
